The winning project

Poplar HARCA’s Employment and Training team created a Future Moves – a flexible, tailor made programme that works one-to-one with young people at risk of unemployment.

The aim of Future Moves is to inspire young people who are under-achieving to broaden their horizons and progress into positive career paths.

The programme helps participants understand their own ambition and create a clear career path. As part of the programme, young people are asked to uncover that drives them, receive life coaching and mentoring from a range of partners, as well as accredited training.

As a result of the programme, the participants gained a new sense of direction, became more confident, articulate and were able to identify their strengths and key skills. Ongoing coaching and mentoring support helped to increase their chances of gaining and sustaining employment and education.

Of the 13 people who completed the programme:

  • five people found full time employment
  • seven people returned to college or sixth form
  • one person is accessing further training support.

What the judges said

This project stood out because of the individual, flexible, tailored support offered to young people and the successful outcomes. It is also highly transferable.
